This composition explores the artistic/philosophical question about the meaning of compositional creativity. The 6 "Sound Studies" contained within this cycle expose the 6 fundamental principles outside of any specific compositional style, on which compositional creativity is based. The first study (Image) is inspired by compositionally external factors, that is the transformation of images and colors into sound offering 3 sound colors and 3 sound images (structures). The sound studies 2 and 6 (contrast a and b) are both based on internal compositional factors. However in case of a) contrasts are created between sound to sound events (non-psychological contrast), while the contrast of b) is based on two musical themes (psychological contrast). Sound studies 3 and 4 are based on compositional methodology. While 3 is based on a 12-tone series 4 is an entirely aleatoric composition. Sound study 5 does not follow an exact musical notation thus allowing much freedom for interpretation and improvisation. None of the 6 Sound studies are intended to favor one method over the other, and it ultimately does not answer the question whether there is value in composing at all. The composition only looks at the fundamental principles underlying compositional creativity and is intended to contribute to a general discussion about music aesthetics and values.
